Featuring exciting and provocative new essays by leading and emerging scholars in Canada and the US, this foundational collection begins a conversation about Latina/o theatre and performance in Canada. The essays query the contours and characteristics of latinidad in Canada's performance spaces within a complex network of hemispheric relations and transnational migrations. While the discipline has witnessed a "hemispheric turn" in the study of theatre and performance in the Americas, Canada has had limited inclusion in this body of scholarship. In their examinations of the groundbreaking work of companies and artists such as Alberto Kurapel, Guillermo Verdecchia, Carmen Aguirre, Aluna Theatre, and PUENTE Theatre, these essays invite us to think more inclusively about the hemisphere and the plurality of the Americas that lie beyond US borders. About the authors
Natalie Álvarez is Associate Dean of Scholarly, Research and Creative Activities and Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies in the School of Performance at Toronto Metropolitan University with research specializations in performance studies, contemporary political performance and rights emergencies in the Americas, immersive performance in the public sphere, Latinx diasporic performance, art activism, and scenario-based pedagogy. She is author of Immersions in Cultural Difference: Tourism, War, Performance (U of Michigan Press, 2018) winner of the Ann Saddlemyer Book Prize by the Canadian Association for Theatre Research (CATR); co-editor with Keren Zaiontz and Claudette Lauzon of Sustainable Tools for Precarious Times: Performance Actions in the Americas (Palgrave Macmillan 2019), winner of the Excellence in Editing award by the Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE); and editor of Latina/o Canadian Theatre and Performance and Fronteras Vivientes: Eight Latina/o Canadian Plays (Playwrights Canada Press, 2013), winners of the 2014 and 2015 Patrick O’Neill Award by CATR. Her most recent book, Theatre & War, is currently in press with Bloomsbury and due for release in January 2023. Her work has been published widely in international journals and essay collections.

Ric Knowles is of anglo-Scottish heritage, and is Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Guelph, editor of Canadian Theatre Review, and past editor of Modern Drama (1999â??2005). He is author of The Theatre of Form and the Production of Meaning, Shakespeare and Canada, and Reading the Material Theatre, co-author (with the Cultural Memory Group) of Remembering Women Murdered by Men, editor of Theatre in Atlantic Canada, Judith Thompson, and The Masks of Judith Thompson, and co-editor (with Joanne Tompkins and W.B.Worthen) of Modern Drama: Defining the Field. He is general editor of the book series Critical Perspectives on Canadian Theatre in English and New Essays on Canadian Theatre from Playwrights Canada Press.
