Description

The medal is awarded each year by the Confederation Centre of the Arts to recognize and honour Canadians who have made special and outstanding contributions to life in Canada. Symons Medal recipients are invited to deliver a lecture on the state of Canada's confederation with reference to their expertise, field, and body of work. Excerpt: The Symons Medal: La médaille Symons: Twenty Years of Reflection on an Evolving Canada: Vingt ans de réflexion sur le Canada, un pays en évolution (by (author) Harvey Sawler; introduction by Bob Rae)

[The Confederation Centre] is a tribute to those famous men who founded our Confederation. But it is also dedicated to the fostering of those things that enrich the mind and delight the heart, those intangible but precious things that give meaning to a society and help create from it a civilization and a culture.
—Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, Opening Ceremony for the Confederation Centre of the Arts, October 6, 1964
