Description
The comics community in Quebec has long been heralded as unique, blending the clear-lined aesthetic of Europe with the underground influences of North America - think Tintin meets R. Crumb. However, most of the work is in the French language. Conundrum Press started its BDANG imprint in 2004 to rectify this situation by translating and publishing work from Quebec comic artists. This volume is a companion to the imprint, collecting interviews and essays on Quebec comics to give context to the history and breadth of the work.
About the authors
Andy Brown is the author of the short story collection I Can See You Being Invisible (D.C. Books, 2003) and founder of the acclaimed small publishing house Conundrum Press. He lives in Montreal.
Helge Dascher has for 25 years translated texts with a dynamic relationship to images. A background in art history and literature has grounded her translation of over sixty graphic novels, many by artists who have broadened the medium's storytelling range. Her translations included acclaimed titles such as Julie Delporte's This Woman's Work (co-translated with Aleshia Jensen, Drawn and Quarterly, 2019), Sophie Bédard's Lonely Boys (co-translated with Robin Lang, Pow Pow Press, 2020) and Michel Rabagliati's "Paul" books (Drawn and Quarterly, Conundrum). She also translates exhibitions, digital stories, and films, most recently Theodor Ushev's The Physics of Sorrow (with Karen Houle, NFB, 2019). A Montrealer, she works from French and German to English.
