In 1953, the Toronto-based group Painters Eleven to presented their Abstracts at Home show to the Toronto public. The exhibition "1953" demonstrates that the spirit that drove them can be illuminated against a background of other changes, developments and innovations in science, technology and society. Its subject is history itself - not that which has been idealized, but a history of the people. Compression and fluidity, and contradiction, serve as operating metaphors for this exhibition. It presents the diversity of a year through a variety of experiences and shows the context in which abstract painting found a home in English-speaking Canada.
