Description

Since 1873, the Mounties have brought the law to the furthest reaches of the Canadian frontier. Sam Steele, the "Lion of the North," was involved in almost every significant event in the Canadian West; James Macleod and James Walsh negotiated peace with the First Nations peoples. Less famous, unsung heroes risked their lives enforcing justice in the Canadian wilds. From stopping the whisky trade to policing the chaotic gold rush and patrolling the lonely North, these true tales of the early days of the Force are sure to amaze and entertain.

The Mounties: Tales of Adventure and Danger from the Early Days

On May 3, 1873, Sir John A. Macdonald introduced a bill into Parliament creating the NorthWest Mounted Police, whose task was to provide law and order in the enormous North-West Territories, which encompassed the prairies and the North. It was not, however, until the Cypress Hills Massacre that men were recruited to the new force, which would one day become the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. The NWMP patrolled Canada’s prairies and north, helping create law and order during the Klondike gold rush, and exploring the vast area, along the way making legends of men like Sam Steele.

Andra-Warner is the author of several books including Hudson’s Bay Company Adventures and The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
