Description
The Canadian Writer's Handbook (CWH) is a comprehensive, college/university-level handbook designed to help students write with confidence in a variety of rhetorical situations. Building on the foundations laid by William Messenger and Jan de Bruyn over twenty-five years ago, Judy Brown and
Ramona Montagnes have completely updated this comprehensive and authoritative text, which features detailed descriptions and examples of the entire writing process, from basic grammar, to constructing sentences and paragraphs, to pre-writing, to composing, and finally to proofreading and editing.
The fifth edition has been slightly reorganized, with the discussion of principles of composition moved to the start of the book to better suit the needs of instructors and students. EAL icons point to new material of particular benefit to students learning English as an additional language. The
discussion on achieving academic integrity and avoiding plagiarism has been brought up to date, as have all examples in the section on documentation.
About the authors
Contributor Notes
The late William E. Messenger and Jan de Bruyn, both emeritus professors of the University of British Columbia, produced the first edition of The Canadian Writer's Handbook in 1980. Judy Brown joined the project as an editorial consultant on the third edition; she is a senior instructor in the
English department at UBC, where she teaches courses in Canadian and children's literature. Ramona Montagnes, also a member of UBC's English department, has been the director of the university's writing centre since 1992 and is responsible for the development of new courses and programs for the
centre.
