No, my son doesn't have a father!
From the delivery room where her son was born to the classrooms where he learns, a woman to whom motherhood status is refused explains: her son doesn't have a father, but he's got two mothers. She is the other mother. A (m)other, but there is no space for that on the forms, no space for that in the minds of her peers, and no space for that in the minds of the kids who play with her son at school.
Adapted from a 2018 CBC Poetry Prize shortlisted poem, this book tells, with tenderness and accuracy, the difficulties that homoparental families face in being accepted for what they are: loving families.
About the authors
Sanita Fezjic is an award-winning Canadian Bosnian writer. Her first book Psychomachia, which means « fight of the soul » in Latin, was shortlisted for the Ken Klonsky short story contest, as well as for the Canada ReLit Prize 2018. Fezjic has published her poems and short stories in several Canadian literary magazines. In 2018, her poem « (M)other » was shortlisted by the CBC Poetry Prize. Fezjic is currently finishing her PhD in cultural studies at Queen's university.
Alisa Arsenault is from Moncton, New Brunswick. She studied printmaking and photography at the Université de Moncton and graduated in 2013. Since her graduation, she participated in several group exhibitions including Somewheres (2014) at Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown (P.E.I.) and Acadie Mythique (2014), a travelling exhibition curated by Harlan Johnson. She is also an active member of Atelier d'estampe Imago. Through the specificity of her own ancestral stories, Alisa's work deals with universal issues, negotiating and renegotiating the inherited narrative. Her exploration of these ever-changing stories emphasizes their distance from the lived reality. Through video, sound and installation, she explores the ephemeral and malleable construction of the chronicled reality. (M)other/Mère(s) et monde is her first collaboration with Bouton d?or Acadie.
