Description
Children travel across generations and across time: yesterday to the present. Childhoods determine the fantasms of existence. Wounds slow to heal: abandonment, adoption, feelings of rejection and uselessness, of blame, of uncontrolled initiation to sexuality, extreme loneliness when one retreats from society, obsessive searching for the absolute, desire to rebuild the world again by giving birth, confrontation of death.
All these themes appear in the violent yet tender stories in this collection, rather like tunnelling through to a rebirth.
About the authors
Pauline Michel expresses herself in several genres: poetry, fiction, plays, and song, including songs and stories for children. Her diverse cultural activities have taken her to other Canadian provinces, France, and several African countries. Pauline was Canada's Parliamentary Poet Laureate from 2004-2006.
Nigel Spencer's work includes acting, directing, teaching, educational research and training, journalism, subtitling and co-scripting films, as well as script-doctoring.
He taught the first bilingual graduate course on Comparative Canadian Dramaturgy (l'Université de Sherbrooke), and a performance-based course on Shakespeare at the State University of New York (Plattsburgh).
He has published six books of translated work by Marie-Claire Blais, including Thunder and Light, Augustino and the Choir of Destruction, and Mai at the Predators' Ball, which earned him three Governor General's Literary Awards for Translation.
His theatre translations include three plays by Evelyne de la Chenelière, one of which, September, will be produced by Canadian Stage in Toronto in 2020.
