The extension of full funding to the final year of secondary schooling in Roman Catholic separate schools and the extension of French language services were major issues in the last two Ontario elections. Opposition to these policies was strong and sustained. The separate school policy was challenged in the courts and several eastern Ontario counties and townships called for referendum on the language policy. John D. Jackson is a native of Montreal and Professor of Sociology at Concordia University. He received an M.A. in 1963 and a Ph.D. in 1967 from Michigan State University. He has published widely in the areas of French-English relations and Canadian cultural development.
