Description

This adorable picture book depicts the cozy places, little friends and memorable adventures that make up the days of a young child. Bella loves the bunny at playschool. It is soft, furry and white --- just like the sweater that Bella's Nonna knit for her birthday. When both bunny and sweater disappear, everyone joins in the search. Their delightful discovery will melt hearts young and old.

Bella and the Bunny is a warm and fuzzy tale of lost and found. Andrew Larsen's winsome words and Kate Endle's rich collage illustrations beautifully recreate the everyday wonders of early childhood.

Bella and the Bunny

Bella and the Bunny, by Andrew Larsen, is a wonderful first book. Bella loves all the sweaters that her Nonna knit for her, but her favourite sweater is soft, furry, and white, just like the bunny at playschool. Bella loves that bunny, especially the way it wiggles its nose when she feeds it and the way it snuggles into the warmth of her sweater when she holds it and strokes its fur. When she forgets her favourite sweater at playschool, Bella goes back the next day to look for it. However, not only does her sweater remain lost, but now so is the bunny. Bella organizes a search for the bunny and, once she finds it, solves two mysteries.

Bella has a strong presence in the story. The teacher here is relegated to the background, allowing Bella to have the appropriate power to do whatever she can to find both the bunny and her favourite sweater. The language is simple and spare, yet engaging and rhythmic, bringing both the reader and the listener directly into the story. Kate Endle’s beautiful collage illustrations are simple and playful, rich and warm, producing a sense of comfort in a child even in the midst of Bella’s mystery and adventure. Children will love the surprise ending and its circular completeness.
