Contributor Notes

Maurice Cranston has held the Chair of Political Science at the London School of Economics since 1968. In 1965, he was Visiting Professor of Government at Harvard, and he taught there again in the summer of 1969. He is well known to the broadcasting audience through the many talks he has contributed to the C.B.C. and B.B.C.
Professor Cranston is the author and editor of a dozen volumes, among which may be mentioned: John Locke, a biography, John Stuart Mill, What are Human Rights?, Western Political Philosophers, and The Social Contract of J.J. Rousseau (translation with an introduction).
A previous volume on Sartre which he published in 1963 under the title: Jean-Paul Sartre, dealt mainly with Sartre’s literary output. While the present volume does not ignore his creative works, it is mainly biographical, philosophical, and political in emphasis.
