Librarian Reviews
Touch It! Materials, Matter and You
Kids Can Press also has a new and original science series, Primary Physical Science. It is another welcome addition to the primary science curriculum which is dominated by often overpriced American series. The text is easy to read and understand and provides clear explanations and easy-to-do experiments. Move It!, for example, discusses pushing and pulling and then gives directions for an experiment of blowing on a ping-pong ball through a straw with varying degrees of force. Each concept covers a double-page spread and includes a bold, lively illustration that clarifies and extends the idea that is being presented. The picture illustrating basic force shows children playing in a playground and asks the reader to find five ways that the children are using force in their play. It is a well-designed book that should be easy for a young child to use and understand. There is a section for parents and teachers that explains each concept in greater detail and suggests further activities to present the concepts to children. Each book includes a table of contents, index and glossary. Two more titles, Build It! Structures, Systems and You and Change It! Solids, Liquids, Gases and You will be coming out in the fall of 2006. This excellent series is a must-have for elementary schools.
