Description
The rise of the so-called New Right is a phenomenon throughout the Western world. In Canada it has taken the form of the Canadian Alliance, formerly known as the Reform Party. This book is the first serious critical examination of the Canadian Alliance and the Reform Party ideology. Itaddresses the most distinctive and politically significant dimensions of the party's understanding of and agenda for democratic politics in contemporary Canada. Specifically, it discusses the Alliance's characteristically "New Right" approach to "social Citizenship" and the welfare state in Canada,which has been a major factor in shaping public attitudes to the welfare state reform, state intervention in the economy, and the desirability of tax reduction. Laycock concludes that while the Canadian Alliance is both a party of the West and of the New Right, its core beliefs are that of thelatter.
