The Breakwater Book of Contemporary Newfoundland Plays, Volume 2, presents an exciting range of work by both established and emerging playwrights. In her eclectic choices, editor Denyse Lynde offers an extraordinarily varied collection of dramatic works hand-picked from the recent successful and active period of production in the province. Ben Pittman’s vivid, historical “The Fights” shares space with Lois Brown’s firmly present-day tale, “Sex, The Rules Of”. Kevin Major’s wartime drama “Lead Me Home” stands next to Ruth Lawrence’s comic romp, “Sweet Pickle.” Exceptionally edited and introduced by Professor Lynde, this anthology makes important work by contemporary playwrights, rooted in Newfoundland’s vibrant theatre tradition, available to new audiences everywhere.

Dr. Denyse Lynde began her university career at Queen’s where she completed a B.A. with honours in English and Drama, before moving on to pursue both and M.A. and a PhD at the University of Toronto’s Graduate Centre for the Study of Drama, the latter of which she completed with a dissertation entitled “Myth and the Image-makers: A Study of the Plays of Gwen Pharis Ringwood and Lady Gregory.”
