Description

The question of whether social control leads to deviance or if deviance leads to social control continues to pose an intellectual challenge to the thousands of students who enrol in Social Control and Deviance courses each year.Social Control in Canada will endeavour to capture the richness and theoretical diversity within which social deviance has been studied. The book will also examine the theoretical, historical and social construction in five of sociology's sub-fields: law, health, sexuality, race, and education. The book will take a critical approach to understanding the historical and social construction of deviance. After an introductory chapter, which examines classical social control theories as well as the currently more influential feminist and post-structuralist theorists, the book is divided into five sections.
