Description
“Putting others before yourself is a tall order. But anyone who even attempts it brings about a change in themselves and in the people around them. It was this underlying philosophy that prompted us to begin a food bank in Rosthern. We had no real blueprint to follow. But we ventured out and took a risk. We would do our best to put others first. This is the story of how it unfolded, the story of Good Neighbours Food Centre in Rosthern, Saskatchewan.”
About the author
Wilmer Froese lives on a farm near Laird, Saskatchewan, with his wife, Barb. They have three married children and five grandchildren who like to come to the farm to play with the dog and cats, ride horses and explore in the hayloft. Wilmer was a grain and dairy farmer for many years and also copastored local churches together with Barb. After retiring from active ministry, he was instrumental in starting the food bank in Rosthern, now called “Good Neighbours Food Centre,” where he took a leadership role in its development and expansion for seven years. One of his recent projects has been helping develop an interpretive site on Stoney Knoll near his home, which tells the story of establishing peaceful relations between settlers in the area and the Stoney Knoll First Nation people in the midst of a land claims issue. He also enjoys travelling, gardening, supporting his family, and speaking in local churches.
