Description
“The sounds of the dying were comforting. Comforting to Megan because she hated fur and fuzz and flapping wings, hated the quick brush against her cheek.” As the bug light zaps unsuspecting insects at a quiet, sprawling old island lodge, guests come and go—old-timers and newcomers, all looking for a break from their lives. Megan contemplates her guests, compares her life to theirs, and realizes she has more than she first believed.
The short story collection Poached Egg On Toast showcases Itani’s ability to shine a clear light on what it feels like to be an outsider, displaced and disconnected from the world at hand, and how a single, small moment can cause a seismic shift in our emotional landscape. Wickedly funny and unbearably sad, Itani’s stories leave us with a renewed sense of humanity.
