About the author
Anne Dublin is a former teacher-librarian and award-winning author living in Toronto. She has written two biographies for Second Story Press – June Callwood: A Life of Action and Bobbie Rosenfeld: The Olympian Who Could Do Everything – as well as Dynamic Women Dancers, part of the Women’s Hall of Fame series and the children’s historical fiction novel The Orphan Rescue.

June Callwood: A Life of Action
June Callwood’s story is a magnificent one and this biography for young adults captures the details of her social activism and her journalistic endeavours quite well. Today’s young people may not realize how extraordinary her work was at a time of global upheaval and a dawning social awareness of Torontonians in need. The book explains the important work done by the many social agencies that were founded by June’s efforts, agencies which include Digger House, Casey House, Nellie’s Hostel for Women and Jessie’s Centre for Teenagers. Young female readers will find June to be an admirable role model for their personal and professional considerations.Anne Dublin recounts June’s story using personal details taken from interviews with her, her family and friends, and from June’s body of writings. The book is thoroughly researched and includes many black and white photographs of Canadian society and events during June’s lifetime.
From her rural childhood and family economic struggles during the Depression, to modern day media persona, June has embraced adventure and advocated for change, displaying compassion and courage during troubled personal and professional hardships. She has been blessed with family and friends who pay tribute to her throughout the book. Since a diagnosis with cancer, her words are reflective of a life that has been fulfilling and strengthening.
