Description
From rush hour on a busy city street to harvest time down on the farm, the Wheels at Work series provides a close-up look at the world of hardworking trucks, buses, ambulances, tractors, combines and more. With simple narrative sentences and vibrant, detailed artwork, these books put kids behind the wheels of some formidable machines. The vehicles they see every day --- in the city or in the country --- are brought to life on each appealing page.
About the author
Don Kilby's unique vision of rural life stems partly from the time he spent on the prairie and partly from the myriad jobs he has held including lumberjack, steelworker, paperboy and graphic artist. His paintings capture the detail and shifting moods of the landscape and its inhabitants. Don illustrated Name of the Child and The Prairie Fire, both written by Marilynn Reynolds. The Prairie Fire was nominated for the CLA Book of the Year Award and chosen for the American Bookseller Association's prestigious Pick of the Lists. Don lives in Eden Mills, Ontario.
Editorial Reviews
Kilby presents a wonderful array of angles, vantage points, and perspectives that capture the confining nature of the city, but still manage to display each vehicle from it's most exciting angle ... An excellent choice as a beginning non-fiction resource or to simply satisfy preschoolers' fascination with these monster vehicles, the Wheels at Work series is definitely on the right track.
Quill & Quire
Two new volumes in the Wheels at Work series (In the City, In the Country) are for youngsters ready for the next step in big-vehicle obsessions. Kilby offers up a variety of scenarios and unique details about working machines, without talking down to his audience. as the author introduces each truck, the lettering appears in bold type, making it pop out of the text. The acrylic illustrations are sophisticated, realistic, and beautiful. No frivolities here -- this pair will be the ultimate ride for the young expert of all things wheeled.
