Description
A collection of recent essays and articles, Demography and Democracy is Himani Bannerji's engagement with the nationalist currents that have become such crucial topics of discussion and debate in recent years. Topics covered include Hindu nationalism, Zionism, subaltern studies, the novels of Rabindranath Tagore, and issues of knowledge, ideology, and representation around the US invasion of Afghanistan. The essays are written from an anti-imperialist Marxist feminist standpoint and offer a bracing critique of contemporary ideologies.
About the author
Himani Bannerji is Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology at York University and the author of several books, including: Thinking Through: Essays in Feminism, Marxism, and Anti-Racism; Unsettling Relations: The University as a Site of Feminist Struggles; Mirror of Class: Essays on Bengali Theatre; Returning the Gaze: Essays on Racism, Feminism, and Politics; Coloured Pictures The Two Sisters; and The Writing on the Wall: Essays on Culture and Politics.
Editorial Reviews
"Bannerji's realm is that of historical materialism, landscaped by the sharp tradition of socialist feminism. It is here that the harsh tales of the present unfold, and it is in these retellings that we see hope's possibilities."— “Vijay Prashad, author of The Darker Nations: A People's History of the Third World
