Suzanne Merritt's father and brother were at the front when the war broke out in 1812 between the British and American forces. Meanwhile in Upper Canada, Suzanne, her sister, and her mother are trying to ensure their own survival. They wait for news of battles and are worried about the fate of the men they love. Suzanne feels torn: her father and brother took the oath of allegiance to the British crown, but her mother and her best friend are both American. However, on the eve of the Battle of Queenston Heights, survival is her only concern.

Kit Pearson est native d?Edmonton, en Alberta. Enfant timide et plutôt solitaire, elle trouvait refuge dans les livres et cette passion ne l?a jamais quittée. Longtemps après ses études en littérature anglaise, elle est retournée à l?université pour étudier la bibliothéconomie. Au cours des 20 dernières années, Kit a remporté de nombreuses récompenses pour ses oeuvres, dont le prix Geoffrey Bilson (romans historiques pour les jeunes), le prix du Gouverneur général et le prix Ruth & Sylvia Schwartz. Deux de ses livres ont aussi remporté le titre de « livre de l'année », une récompense décernée par l'Association canadienne des bibliothèques (ACB). Kit vit à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique.
Kit Pearson is a native of Edmonton, Alberta. A rather solitary and shy child, she found refuge in books and this passion has never left. Long after her studies in English literature, she returned to university to study Librarian Sciences. Over the past 20 years, Kit has won numerous awards for her works, including the Geoffrey Bilson Award (for historical novels for young people), the Governor General's Award and the Ruth and Sylvia Schwartz Award. Two of her books have also won the Book of the Year Award by the Canadian Library Association (CLA). Kit lives in Victoria, British Columbia.
