Canada's notorious Prison for Women was opened in 1934 in Kingston to house the nation's most dangerous female criminals, and although the institution was declared "unfit for animals" by a Royal Commission only four years later in 1938, the doors did not close permanently until 2000.Women in Cages is the story of "P4W" — the evolving debate between punishment and rehabilitation, the experiments with LSD as a form of treating women inmates, the Arbour Commission hearings into cruel and unusual punishment involving strip searches, and the women caged within its walls, including the infamous Evelyn Dick. Central to the history of the P4Wis the Elizabeth Fry Society, the women and men who have followed the example of their founder by alleviating the suffering of women offenders and by lobbying for their humane treatment.
