An overview of nine coastal and fisheries comanagement case studies in South Africa are provided in this book. The approach used in this work reflects the worldwide trend to implement models that utilize local user groups in the management of coastal and fisheries resources. The concepts and theoretical underpinnings of comanagement are outlined, and the policy and legal framework governing coastal and fisheries resource management in southern Africa are detailed. Also examined are the conditions needed to ensure successful comanagement, the positive outcomes of adopting this approach, the principal challenges, comparisons with international experience, and the viability of implementing coastal and fisheries comanagement for South Africa.
