Description
Sapergia's subject matter, creatures that inhabit the Canadian wilderness, is recognizable, but the situations into which they are drawn are perplexing. These drawings lend themselves to comparisons with earlier traditions of western scientific representation which had been firmly established by the eighteenth century. Sapergia's use of this strategy, in the context of the propositions that she writes into her titles, however, becomes almost cinematic and functions like a movie close-up. The drawings relate almost imposible moments and the kind of contorted awkwardness that betray some abrupt and unexpected turn of events as the body of each creature responds to the physical stresses of whatever force or action has taken it over.
