Description

This selection of 45 stories, from Nathaniel Hawthorne to Sherman Alexie, shows the range of short fiction in the past 150 years. This third edition includes more works from the past 20 years and a greater representation of American authors; new to this edition are works by Katherine Anne Porter, Grace Paley, Donald Barthelme, Edward P. Jones, Gish Jen, and George Saunders, among others.

Stories are organized chronologically, annotated, and prefaced by engaging short introductions. Also included is a glossary of basic critical terms.

Editorial Reviews

"The third edition of The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction is another Broadview masterpiece. As in previous editions, a canonical core blends beautifully with the inclusion of fresh contemporary authors, creating an anthology that is useful in a wide variety of settings. The third edition includes additional women's voices as well as substantial revisions to the second half of the collection, keeping in step with ever-shifting interests in contemporary literature. The pieces in The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction remain diverse, thoughtfully chosen, and extremely teachable."

Katie Daily-Bruckner, Boston College

"The new edition of The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction is the best anthology of its kind I have found. There is a balanced representation of world writers as well as of male and female writers. The introductory biographical information is excellent."

Theresa Flowers, University of North Texas

"The anthology works well to demonstrate the scope of the short story; students will get an excellent sense of what it has been and what it can be. One of the reasons I chose the book for my course is its breadth in terms of multicultural writers. In this new edition, I find many of the authors who are setting the bar for the short story—important authors, but also accessible ones."

Denise Rogers, Director of the Writing Center, University of Louisiana at Lafayette

"Every teacher of writing talks about how what they really want for their classes is a collection of fiction that spans the modern and the classic, stories from small journals and famous collections, with varied voice and introductions that put each writer and their work into context. The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction is that book. I can't wait to put this to use in my courses."

Teague Bohlen, University of Colorado Denver
