Tadeo’s Search for Circles

From his home in Central America, Tadeo hunts for the perfect circle but bubblegum rings pop, sandcastles wash away and even goodnight yawns aren’t exact. At bedtime, with circles still on his mind, Tadeo embarks on a magical journey. Elegant giraffes in Africa, minarets and bazaars in Istanbul, the London Eye and Arctic bears all offer possibilities. Only after skimming home across wondrous scenes and finally falling into the safety of his mother’s arms does Tadeo recognize his perfect circle.

Combining the pragmatic with the illusory, this gentle read will engage children as both onlooker and participant. The poetic text is rich and imaginative, creating a satisfying bedtime story with a wise and comforting message that both preschool and primary age children will enjoy, each finding different aspects to intrigue them.

The pleasing text is beautifully complemented by Kyrsten Brooker’s artwork, a combination of collage and oil in sumptuous colours. Double-page spreads convey the vastness of Tadeo’s journey, whimsical details keep the reader hunting for intriguing minutiae and world map endpapers offer subject matter for discussion.

Winner of the 2012 Independent Publisher Book Award, this book is an attractive and enticing read-aloud that should be popular with both children and adults.
