This book fires a shot at the theoretical bastions that this society has erected around the concepts of "leisure" and "sport." The readings put the issue in a historical perspective to show that "sport" and "leisure" are part of and not separate from the control of the working class by capitalism.

About the authors

HART CANTELON teaches sociology, history and comparative studies in the School of Physical and health Education, Queen’s University. He also serves as the Director of the Centre for Sport and Leisure Studies. His research interests encompass sport and leisure in the state-socialist societies, the workers’ sports movement and children in high-performance sport.

ROBERT HOLLANDS was a Research Fellow at the Centre for sport and Leisure Studies at Queen’s University. He is currently working at the Trade Union Resource Centre, Newcastle, England. His major areas of interest include youth and leisure, sport and working-class culture, and Marxist theories of cultural production.
