Great Athletes from our First Nations

This is a unique collection of biographies of successful Aboriginal athletes who have overcome disabilities and discriminations to achieve tremendous accomplishments in sports. Women of note are Cheri Becerra-Madsen, a paraplegic, who was the first Aboriginal American female to win a medal in the Paralympics Games, and Naomi Lang, an ice dancer, who was the first Aboriginal American female to participate in the Olympic Winter Games. There are stories of great courage and determination such as Alwyn Morris, a kayaker, whose chance to participate in the 1980 Olympic Games was ruined because of the international boycott of the Games. He went on to win gold in the 1984 Games.

Vincent Schilling is a member of the Mohawk tribe in Virginia and an amateur athlete.
