Harold James Enrico was born in 1921 in Cle Elum, Washington. In 1939 he entered the University of Washington to study music, languages, and literature. World War II intervened, and he served in the US Army for four years; he was passionately opposed to war the rest of his life. In 1945, while studying German in New York City, he met his future wife, Theresa Conroy. They married on St. Patrick's Day 1946; they had five children and two grandsons.
