Description

As Canada seeks to expand its Pacific ties and augment its ever stronger links to Hong Kong, much attention has been given to Canada's burgeoning Chinese community. Beneath the newspaper stories is a proud, diverse citizenry -- one as old as Canada itself -- which has integrated into the mainstrem of Canadian society.

This book brings together in-depth interviews with 21 Chinese Canadians talking about their lives, their experiences in Canada as new-comers or second generation Canadians, and, ultimately, their love of this place. Be they elders, internationally famous musicians and scientists, successful buisnesspeople, politicians or shopkeepers, what emerges is a portrait of determination and quiet courage.

The rocky road travelled by many Chinese is not ignored -- there are old grievances, amongst them the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1923 and the hated Head Tax, and new ones, sometimes reflecting a lingering racism. But what strikes the reader is the warmth of tone prevalent throughout and the genuine affection for this country.

Each interview stands alone, augmented by formal and archival photographs and a brief biography. Interviewees includ Adrienne Clarkson, David Lam, Peter Li, Roy May and Beni Sung, among others.

This is a new release of the book published in August 1993.
