Chicken, Pig, Cow On the Move

Last year’s Chicken, Pig, Cow went on to become one of the CCBC’s Best Books for Kids & Teens 2009. Now the clay animals are back in a wonderful new adventure.

Chicken, Pig, and Cow reluctantly admit that there doesn’t seem to be enough space for them in their popsiclestick barn. With Chicken standing on Cow’s hoof, and Cow squishing Chicken’s tail, and Chicken wearing Pig’s tail, the animals decide it’s time to move to a bigger place. Pig’s choice of a possible new home turns out to be too linty and Cow’s choice turns out to be too scary, but the dollhouse Chicken finds is perfect. Despite the extra room, though, when none of them can fall asleep alone, they seek one another out, finally crowding together in a bathtub and falling asleep.

This fun, touching story uses simple and spare language which, combined with engaging characters, makes for a wonderful read-aloud. From Pig jumping on the dollhouse bed to Chicken looking in the fridge, the watercolour illustrations are filled with a natural humour that will delight readers. Children will love searching for traces of lint that remain for several pages after Pig’s choice of a new home, as well as finding out what makes Cow’s choice of home so scary. Perhaps the best illustration, though, is at the end where the animals are now outside enjoying “a little adventure.” Children will love seeing Chicken’s peering curiously at a garden hose, unaware that Mother is about to turn it on.

Chicken, Pig, Cow on the Move (A Ruth Ohi Picture Book)

“Everybody on a move, la la la...” When Chicken, Pig and Cow grow restless in their cramped popsicle-stick barn, they look for a new home. Girl’s dollhouse seems like a suitable fit for them, but then they discover that perhaps their jam-packed barn wasn’t so bad after all. This charming tale features gentle watercolour artwork.
