Description

This collection of essays is devoted to the work of Antonio D'Alfonso, a pivotal figure in the bilingual history of Canadian literature. This much anticipated volume gives Antonio D'Alfonso recognition for the enormous contribution he has made to Canadian writing, over nearly fifty years. He has worked as a writer, editor, translator and filmmaker in Quebec and in Ontario. D'Alfonso identifies as a bilingual writer, but he also speaks and writes in Italian. And he has translated works from French and Italian into English, and from English into French. Each contributor to this volume is a witness to D'Alfonso's literary accomplishments. His experiments with genre alone demand critical analysis. The volume Antonio D'Alfonso: Essays on His Works includes a two part introduction by Joseph Pivato and Licia Canton, essays by Lianne Moyes, Domenic Beneventi, Mariam Pirbhai, Lucie Lequin, Nancy Giacomini, Connie Guzzo-McParland, Joseph Pivato, Licia Canton and Simon Harel. The volume closes with two interviews, by Domenic Cusmano and Licia Canton, and a selected bibliography. As the texts in this volume clearly emphasize, Antonio D'Alfonso's writing represents a vital contribution to Canadian and Quebecois literary and artistic production.

Excerpt: Antonio D'Alfonso: Essays On His Works (edited by Licia Canton)

Antonio D'Alfonso became a writer in Montreal, the city he calls home. He hasn't always felt quite at home in Montreal, but the personal and professional journeys he has undertaken in his search for a more fulfilling "home" have taken him right back--Montreal is home. ... To be a Montreal writer is to be part of a minority, no matter the language or culture that one identifies with. To have been raised Italian in Montreal implies a constant daily shift between spaces, between cultures, between mentalities and codes of behaviour, between the North American and the European, and the constant challenge of reaching an equilibrium. And this environment has certainly informed Antonio D'Alfonso's creative process.
