Canadian University Presses Celebrate University Press Week 2017
My Decade at Old Sun, My Lifetime of Hell
Excerpt

“Often fear is the only emotion that comes when we are unsure of the unknown. I took a courageous step in my approach to the unknown by writing this book in hopes that it will help me in my journey of healing and recovery from my abuse at Old Sun Residential School. Everything else I have attempted eventually led me back to myself without any resolution to rid me of my demons. My emotions still overtake me at times, and I sit and cry for myself and many others who are not here—gone, but alive in my memory. May your spirits guide me, as they did in my writing of this book. If your spirit is restless, I hope this book will give you some sense of peace. If that is the case, I too will be at peace with you.”

Why it's on the list ...
This book shows off the university press as a place where works that are both intellectually and emotionally challenging come from. Arthur wrote the memoir and then Frits Pannekoek added a scholarly afterword that puts Arthur's frustration, despair, and hope in the context of the repeated failure of both the Canadian government and the Canadian legal system to address injustice and inequality and the often bizarre and insulting attempts to reconcile historical wrongs with sums of cash.

This compelling biography takes a similar tack, tracing the experience of a francophone woman within the male-dominated Quebec legal profession – and within the primarily anglophone world of the Supreme Court. Ranching Women in Southern Alberta

edition:Paperback

Once dominated by large cattle operations covering thousands of acres, Alberta in the 1880s-1930s saw a shift as small, family-owned ranches began to dot the province's southern plains. While this era of agriculture might conjure images of cowboys riding through the foothills or ranch hands tilling the prairie fields, women, too, played an integral part in this rapidly changing industry. Ranching Women in Southern Alberta explores the world of these women, and their efforts to ensure the economi …
