About
Joe Schlesinger
In the fall of 2003, we called in from the field Canada's most senior foreign correspondent. Joe Schlesinger was nearing the end of distinguished career covering the world for the CBC. He was a pure reporter who always turned away from opportunities to work a desk in order to stay on the story. A native of Vienna, he was raised in Czechoslovakia before being sent by his parents to England in 1939 as part of a rescue program for Jewish children. His parents were killed in the Holocaust. He had a long career in journalism before joining the CBC in the mid-1960s. On a cool October night we again overfilled our 140-seat theatre, setting up chairs in the wings on the stage as Schlesinger took us into the heart of the story that defined the correspondent's life — war.
