Kazimierz Patalas was an active member of the Polish Underground during World War II. Before immigrating to Canada in 1967, he was Professor of Hydrobiology at the Freshwater Institute in Olsztyn, Poland. He continued his research at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg, where he worked as a research scientist for 25 years.
