LEANNE FRANSON first studied Fine Arts at Concordia University. After working as a dishwasher, massage therapist, short-order cook, waitress, foot courier, and clerk at a fine arts materials shop, she decided to devote herself to illustrating children's books. She has done work for Soulières Éditeur, Annick Press, Scholastic, Les éditions de la courte échelle, Canadian Living Magazine, Bayard Canada, and many more. Originally from Regina, SK, she lives with her son, two cats, and her Saint-Bernard in Montreal.

"I don't know," Peggy said. She pointed to a spot where a section of sandbags had fallen over and left a gap. "Those sandbags don't look like they could stop much."
    She glanced up at the sun, which was getting lower in the sky.
    "I've got to get home to help with milking," she said.
    "Me too," said Tom. There was never a holiday from milking.
    Reluctantly, Tom turned away from the widening brown river. If there were a flood, what would the Lone Ranger do?

Sara pushed open the bakery door. "Where is Maneki Neko?" she asked Obaachan. Obaachan was Sara's Japanese grandmother. She stood behind a long counter with a glass front. More buns and pastries were lined up behind the glass.
Usually Obaachan smiled broadly when Sara arrived. But this afternoon her round face was long and sad. "Gone," she said. "Maneki Neko is gone."
