As a child, Greg Dombowsky was inspired by Jacques Cousteau's incredible portrayals of underwater marine life and knew that when he grew up he would learn to dive. When he did start diving in the late 1980s, he found a need for a book that more thoroughly covered his home base of Victoria. He also concluded that maps specifically created for divers would be more useful than the nautical charts usually included in diving guides. With the purchase of a 17-foot Avon inflatable boat, Greg was able to explore more of the local dive sites. His increasing knowledge of the area, his progress through the PADI ranks, and his growing computer skills (which allowed him to "draw" the maps for the book), gave him the inspiration and confidence to begin writing this book this book in 1995. Since then he has dived every site in this book at least twice, and most of them many, many times.
Greg Comments: The Victoria area is an incredible place to dive. The marine life here rivals any that I have seen anywhere in the world. By taking my passion for scuba diving to another level by way of underwater photography, I have realized the incredible variety and complexity of marine life that we have here. There are so many world-class dive sites easily accessible from the city, as well as the convenience of may dive shops close by. You can go out for a dive in the morning and be home by noon.
