Maureen Bush has written 4 books including the first two in the Veil of Magic series, The Nexus Ring and Crow Boy. Her books have been short listed for numerous awards including the Silver Birch and the Saskatchewan Diamond Willow. She has a Post-graduate Certificate of Creative Writing from Humber College. She also obtained a Bachelor’s degree in History and a Masters in Environmental Design (Environmental Science), both from the University of Calgary. Born in Edmonton, Maureen Bush now lives in Calgary.
There he stood, my grandmother's Spirit Man. He came up to my thigh, carved out of wood so dark it was almost black—wearing a scowl and a ring through his nose and a grass skirt that should have looked silly but didn't. He looked angry and strong and mean. I tried to swallow, but my throat was too dry.
He launched himself at me again, raking his claws down my arm. I grabbed a book and beat him back. When he was on the floor on the far side of the bed, I dashed out the door, slamming it behind me. I leaned against it, panting, while he screamed and clawed at the door. What had I done?
