Maddie cannot remember a day when the people of her village hadn't toiled in the fields from dawn until dusk. Although she knows no one should ever forget the great famine that devastated the village many years before, she cannot help but long for more than the work of farming each and every day. One day, when the villagers are hard at work, they discover an old wooden chest buried in the mud. Hoping to find treasure, they open the trunk to disappointment. Nothing of use, only some musical instruments, flimsy clothing and shoes. The chest is tossed aside and the work resumed. But Maddie is unable to forget the lure of the mysterious chest. Her curiosity reveals the path for the village's return to colour, music and laughter.
