Description

The quintessential look at the game of golf in Canada Published in association with the Royal Canadian Golf Association, A Century of Champions is the ultimate commemorative work showcasing the passion of golf in this country. A carefully documented volume, The Open Golf Championship of Canada 1904-2004 highlights important historical moments of The Open: the world-renowned winners, spectacular courses, trophies and statistics. The game of golf was present in Canada as early as 1824, but really began to flourish after the organization of the Royal Montreal club in 1873, only a few years after Confederation and well before the game took root in the United States. A club was subsequently founded in Quebec in 1875, and the first inter-club match in the Americas was staged between the clubs in 1876. Canada has produced some excellent golfers and names such as George Knudson, Dave Barr and Mike Weir figure prominently. Canadians themselves have won the Cup three times (in 1968, 1980, and 1985), and have taken the individual competitions five times (Stan Leonard in 1954 and 1959, George Knudson in 1966, Al Balding in 1968, and Dave Barr in 1983). With a wide array of expert contributors from the world of golf, the lavishly illustrated The Open Golf Championship of Canada 1904-2004 contains over 200 archival and contemporary photographs in full colour and black and white. The Open Golf Championship of Canada 1904-2004. It's comprehensive, gorgeous and a must-have for any golf player or admirer.
