Description

Through time and across continents, stories of sweets and their inventors intrigue and entertain us. Learn about primal sweets — from honey, sweet milk, and nuts to sugar candy, chocolate, and “sweet” stories of success.

Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy takes us through history from 4,000 B.C., when islanders in Papua New Guinea cut sugarcane for its sap, and 2,600 B.C., when the first-known beekeepers produced honey to embalm the dead, to 500 A.D., when the Chinese made pear and plum syrups from unripe fruit, and all the way through to the world’s first chocoholics and modern-day candy factories.

From cravings to the scoop on ice cream, Ann Love and Jane Drake present a comprehensive and irresistible story of candy through the ages, complemented by a detailed timeline and playful illustrations from artist Claudia Dávila.

Editorial Review

“…the results are delightful. In fact, reading their new book is a little like dipping into a grab bag from the candy store: the experience is fun, varied, and relatively cheap, considering the pleasure it gives. The difference is that you can take in the whole book at a single sitting and feel the better for it. Underneath its whimsical exterior — the humorous cartoon illustrations, the fun bits of trivia — there’s a centre of solid research. The writing is clear and engaging…. This thoughtfully constructed book is a treat to read.”

Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy

Do you ever marvel about the discovery of candy as you gently roll your tongue around the delicious, sweet bursting flavour of your favorite treat? Or do you simply tear off the package of your desired, mouth-watering indulgence, only to chew and ingest it so quickly you didn’t delight in the sugary taste, let alone question its evolution?

Sweet! The Delicious Story of Candy by Ann Love and Jane Drake is a delightful and amusing book filled with aweinspiring facts on sweet treats that will have you craving more information. The authors write in an entertaining manner that fascinates the reader as they reveal the truth about the first sweets – from honey and nuts to the discovery of modern day candy factories.

The attractive title and eye-catching cover is appealing and puts emphasis on the creativity of the book. The contents of the book are organized into five sections, which are divided into several chapters. The colourful and comical pictures illustrated by Claudia Davila enhance the intriguingly thorough stories. Included in the footnotes of the book is a detailed timeline that begins with documentation dating from 6000 BC and continues throughout the book with important data dating to 2006 AD. The timeline consists of modern place names, followed by historical names for people.

Readers will gain an insightful appreciation for candy makers as they gain knowledge about the variety of sweets and customs that take place throughout the centuries and across the continent. I applaud the authors and illustrator for their efforts in creating a “sweet” book that educates the reader about the evolution of everyone’s favourite sweet treat.

This book is highly recommended.
