Description

When you crack the cover of Reflections in Glass and Stone and view any one of more than sixty full-colour images of Peter Allan Rice’s artistry, it evokes a greater appreciation for the shrinking natural world around us and transports you to a place of peace and tranquility. With each turn of the page, his glass, stone and metal creations challenge us to look at our relationship with the environment as well as the people and creatures that we share it with. Overlain on smoky and subtle images, Peter’s written descriptions fill us with hope and inspire all of us to strive for the same sort of colour and light in our world that we see reflected so wondrously in his sculptures.

About the author

Peter Allan Rice was born in Toronto, but spent most of his childhood years living in rural locations within or around the Great Canadian Shield. Playing and exploring amongst the rocks, water and windswept pines provided plenty of formative inspiration and a strong influence on his subsequent art. These passions led him to obtain a Visual Arts degree at Guelph University in 1977. Under the guidance of renowned artists such as Walter Bachinski and John Fillion, he explored a variety of mediums to find his ideal fit. When his attentions turned to the sculptural possibilities of glass, his creativity flourished. After producing a series of two—dimensional works, he began to angle sections of flat glass to create three—dimensional effects. In time, Peter began creating unique and sophisticated sculptures which could stand alone on pedestals of indigenous stone, resulting in sculptural landscapes hitherto unseen in this medium. Peter was named "Top Sculptor" at the McMichael Canadian Collection Autumn Art Sale in 2017, 2018, and 2019, and Best in Show at the 2019 "McMichael Volunteer Committee's Autumn Art Sale.

About the sculpture: In the failing light, always take the time to reflect. Look back, and know that you have lightened a life with a smile and a laugh. Be certain that you have truly listened to the thoughts of others. Remember compassionate acts for those who are marginalised or distressed. Reflect on the marvels the Earth provides, and continue to be a strong defender and steward of its fragile gifts. As daylight fades, release all negative thoughts, and be at peace in the promise of tomorrow, as you bathe in the glow of last light.

"Your works have reminded me of many wonderful canoe and camping adventures in Algonquin, The Black River near Thunder Bay, the French River, and many other parks in Ontario. Your sensitive and thoughtful descriptions of each piece will also remind me of my feelings during those adventures."
