Description
The works in this exhibition create a dialogue of the formal affinity between the two artists that is obvious. It is their shared concern to safeguard the reality of a painting against internal threat by the gratuitous, the easy or the baroque. As Mead has said: "The essential thing was to maintain the reality of the painting, and to make cerain that it did not owe its being to transient effects of colour and constant light changes, that it had a reality within itself". This "reality in itself" is what both painters are after - and it is perhaps sufficient testament to their originality to say that this is what they achieve.
