Ottawa Citizen Holiday Gift Guide

This guide is a great introduction to hockey's greatest players and hockey fans will be delighted with all the information provided, including some of the anecdotes in the biographical information, such as the fact that Tim Horton was "nicknamed" 'Mister Magoo' because of his poor eyesight and 'Superman' because of his strength (p. 239) or that Stan Mikita was "one of only four players (with Alex Delvecchio, Steve Yzerman, and Mike Modano) to play at least 20 seasons with only one organization". Hockey fans and hockey trivia buffs of all ages will enjoy this publication.

Hockey fans throughout North America will enjoy this beautiful and richly illustrated record of the lives and careers of the nearly 400 players, builders, and on-ice officials whose signal contributions to hockey, and not merely the National Hockey League, have led to their enshrinement in the Hall of Fame located in Toronto. Beginning with Sid Abel and concluding with Steve Yzerman, the interested reader is treated to a brief account of the exploits of these fascinating athletes, enhanced here by the inclusion of photos depicting long-ago greats in their varied equipment and arenas. Notable as well are the vignettes explaining interesting trivia--such as "Who was born in Australia or Taiwan?"--and answers to trick questions such as which cities possess a small-size Stanley Cup trophy. The compilation of information on the female and European Hall of Famers is also noteworthy. This is a perfect addition to the reference and sporting sections of school and public libraries; for all hockey fans, young and old.

A book that will be hard to resist for anyone interested in the position between the posts. It has great photos, profiles of the 33 goalies in the Hockey Hall of Fame, and an essay by ex-NHLer Brian Hayward on the question of whether goalies are crazy. A wonderful pocket-sized guide, perfect to have close by while watching the game. Two full pages are devoted to every NHL player in the Hockey Hall of Fame, in alphabetical order from Sid Abel to Steve Yzerman.
