Nations of the Plains
Another of the Native Nations of North America series. This book introduces the indigenous people who lived in an area of one million square miles in central North America. The open areas of the plains presented challenges of climate and lack of plant life. The people who lived there relied on the buffalo. The three main areas were the Northern Plains, the Central Plains and the Southern Plains. The housing differed depending on environment and lifestyle. Because many different languages were spoken on the Plains, sign language allowed the different nations to communicate. The introduction of the horse by the Spanish explorers changed the way of life of the Plains nations.
