Description
Five-year-old Clayton Kingsley was in his backyard building a sandcastle two minutes ago. Now the sandbox is empty, so is the swing. And the gate that kept the world at bay is open...His mother Jenny, recently divorced, has left behind a controlling mother and an abusive husband, who thought more of his buddies and the bottle than being a father to his son. Now that son is missing. Is Jenny’s ex really the distraught parent he seems or is he the culprit? As the days go by with no sign of Clayton, Jenny searches frantically for her son. Who could have taken him? If not his father, could it be her sexy, secretive neighbor, a man suspected for the disappearance of another child? Or is there a serial predator in the serene bedroom community that Jenny thought would be the perfect place to raise her son?

Excerpt: Missing Clayton (by (author) Bev Irwin)
She had to know...Jenny saw indistinct forms moving beyond the panes of frosted glass. The odors of disinfectant and formaldehyde permeated through the cracks. She put a hand to her nose in a vain attempt to avoid inhaling the fumes.Detective Sanders had her wait while he slipped through the door. A moment later he returned with a distinguished, older man with a silver-gray beard. The man grabbed a white lab coat off a hook by the door and slipped it over his operating room greens. The knee length coat was stained with coffee and pen marks, but at least it hid the stains from blood and other bodily fluids.“Mrs. Kingsley, this is Dr. Murray,” said Sanders.Automatically Jenny accepted the large callused hand he extended. Her gaze was drawn to his serious blue eyes. They seemed to hold a wealth of wisdom and kindness, as if he had been through hell and back again. With his warm handshake and gentle smile, Jenny felt some of his strength radiate into her, almost enough to carry her through this ordeal. Stooped shoulders leaned toward her and his eyes searched hers. His voice was at once soft and firm. “Can you do this?”“I have to know.”“Yes.” He nodded slowly. “Is no one with you?”“His father is out with the search party.” Jenny didn’t tell him that she could have wakened her mother to be with her. She wasn’t sure if she had the strength to deal with both this and her mother’s unpredictable reaction. If her son was beyond these frosted doors, nothing would ever matter again.
