Description
Published here for the first time in English, this memoir of Dr. Albert Skarvan, a Slovak by birth and national consciousness and citizen of the Habsburg monarchy, who derived his pacifist ideas from Tolstoy's works. After refusing to serve out his terms in the Astro-Hungarian army, he was tried and sentences to imprisonment.
About the author
Peter Brock (1920-2006) was a member of the Department of History at the University of Toronto. He is author of The Slovak National Awakening, and co-editor, with H. Gordon Skilling, of The Czech Renascence of the Nineteenth Century.
