While current events have focused the public's attention on Korea once again, many veterans of the conflict that occurred there half a century ago worry that their time spent fighting in the "Forgotten War" will not be remembered or understood unless their story is told. Award-winning nonfiction author Linda Granfield has collected the personal accounts of 32 men and women who served with the Canadian and U.S. forces in Korea during the years 1950-53 and has described the main events of the war.
The veterans in this book represent different branches and aspects of the military, including medical, supplies, infantry, and naval. Their moving, sometimes graphic, recollections are illustrated with their own photographs. As commemorative ceremonies this year mark the 50th anniversary of the end of the Korean War, attempting to understand the human face of war is more important than ever.
About the authors
Linda Granfield has won many awards for her non-fiction/history titles for young readers and adults including the Vicky Metcalf Award for a Body of Work. Her books include In Flanders Fields: The Story of the Poem by John McCrae, Pier 21: Gateway of Hope, Canada Votes and America Votes. She lives in Toronto, Ontario.

Russell Freedman (born 1929 in San Francisco) is a biographer and author of nearly 50 books for young people. He is most notable for receiving the 1988 Newbery Medal with his work Lincoln: A Photobiography. In 1998, he received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal for his lifelong contribution to children's literature. He received one of the 2007 National Humanities Medals. He currently lives in New York City.
