Description

Between the Tides features recent and ongoing works since 1995 by Doug Guildford, including crocheted sculptural forms, plaster-casts, print-work and drawings, all based on forms associated with Nova Scotia's South Shore coast, where the Halifax native spends his summers. He is well known for fine-art prints, featuring forms derived from shoreline ecosystems and occupying an fluid zone between plant and animal, natural and human. Guildford's artistic practice, rooted in drawing, has evolved into a "language" of marks and symbols that, as he says, "wanders suggestively between male and female and lays claim to the ambiguous terrain of the intertidal zone." Between the Tides features textile sculptures produced by crocheting various materials such as metal wires, often installed in the ocean to alter their patina. These pay homage to the traditional handwork of Maritimers and the economies that support them. These fantastic, amorphous sculptures continue to grow and accrue meaning as they travel between studio and seashore. This full-colour exhibition catalogue also illustrates plaster casts of negative spaces that the artist carved into beach sand with his own hands, and drawings and paintings, notebooks and scavanged objects from which the artist develops his ideas. The publication features an essay by curator Maralynn Cherry.
