Description

My hope for this book is that I give a glimpse to you, the reader, into the experiences we went through when my husband - a young, healthy man - was diagnosed at age 50 with Early Onset Alzheimer's. My aim is to give you some insight into how to perhaps deal with each change with a little more understanding, and the knowledge that you aren't alone. On those days where you are frustrated or unsure if you can continue with your journey as a caregiver through this terrible disease, you must remember that nobody is infallible and nobody is a saint. You are human, you make mistakes, and you are doing the very best you can.

When my husband was first diagnosed, I remember telling a friend, "I don't think I can do this; I don't know if I can ever do the full care when he gets to that stage." I was able to continue the care-giving a lot longer than I ever imagined - one day at a time.

I wanted to "give back" in some way to help others who are facing what we faced. My memories are still very vivid right from the first indication that something was wrong. I don't regret any of the treatments we tried or the care-giving I did. My only regret is that I wasn't able to cure him.

From our family to yours.

God bless you in your journey, knowing you aren't alone.

DEDICATION

This book is dedicated to those caring for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s and Early Onset Alzheimer’s disease.

God bless you in your journey. My hope is that you’ll take something away from this book that brings a little peace in knowing you aren’t alone.

Special thanks to all those who helped me and Steve on our journey and to those caregivers that gave him special attention and care. My thanks and love are with you always.

Heartfelt thank you to my great friend, Clifton W. Anderson, who spent time reading my book after each iteration, reflecting on his own journey through similar circumstances. His feedback and suggestions were invaluable and much appreciated.

A portion of book proceeds will be donated to: The Phoenix Network and/or The Alzheimer’s Association

LOOKING BACK

Sometimes I look back and wonder how we didn’t see the signs of this disease starting. He didn’t repeat himself or ask the same question over and over again like so many do. Every once in a while, a memory will come to me and I think, yes, I bet that was a sign but at the time I hadn’t recognized it as such.

Coffee Shop

When we went to the donut shop for a coffee and bagel, Steve started telling me to go into the store to get it. We always went through the drive-through but now he was insistent on not going through the drive-through. I would say, “Come on, just go through the drive-through.” He would drive through, but I had to order from the passenger seat instead of him doing it.

When I think about it now, I’m sure it was because he was afraid of not remembering what to order
